Today, I have a great blog post about how to use your tax refund from my friend Jeff. Jeff began his career at a private wealth management firm, but now runs two blogs full time. Between VTX Capital and Breaking The One Percent, he's dedicated to helping millennials and young entrepreneurs grow their online businesses and dominate their personal finances.
Each year when tax season rolls around, I like to take a step back and look at the Big Picture when it comes to my personal finances. Most years, I end up getting somewhere between $500-$2,000 back from the IRS.
Usually, I put a little bit of that towards my student loan debt, throw some money in my IRA, or just cushion my emergency savings a bit. And of course I'll occasionally splurge on a fun toy.
Hey, I'm human.
But in 2014, I decided to do something different with my tax refund.
I decided to make the biggest investment of all, and put the money towards starting my own online business.
Why?
I had only been working for "The Man" for two years, but I could already feel myself growing tired of the idea of working for somebody else. Maybe it was the dysfunctional office politics of a small business, or perhaps my own ego that made me think I could do better on my own, but I knew deep down that entrepreneurship was the end goal for me.

It was an itch that was growing stronger with each passing month. I knew I had to find a way out from my 9-5.
The thing was, I actually liked the type of work I was doing. I worked for a financial advisor, and I was pretty quickly moving up the ranks. I really enjoyed being able to help clients with investing their money and planning for their retirement.
But one thing I really didn't like about my job, though, was the amount of face to face schmoozing I had to do with clients and prospects. I hated the constant demand to get more assets in the door, even if it meant selling your soul to do it.
I knew that if I wanted to do business on my own, I was going to need a totally different strategy.
That's when I started researching successful online businesses.
The Blogging Business ModelAt first, I had never really considered blogging as a viable alternative to my day job. I was a finance guy, not a "blogger".
The problem was, at the time I was completely unaware at the time of how the whole blogging business model even worked. Sure, I was a regular reader of several financial websites, but until I looked at them from a "business" lens (and not just as someone who enjoyed reading articles) I never really understood how blogs could make money.
Then I discovered what "Income Reports" were. I saw that many bloggers were making crazy amounts of money. And they were reaching tens and even hundreds of thousands of readers each month.
I was completely hooked on the concept.
With a blog, I knew it was possible for me to:
Help people at scale…
Have flexibility to deliver help in a way I was naturally better at (writing awesome content)…
Not have to deal with the constant pressure of drumming up new clients…
Potentially make more money than working a corporate job.
Of course, I knew it wouldn't be easy. I vividly remember reading about how most bloggers don't end up making any money at all and never "make it big."
I was going to try, though. Between affiliate marketing, display advertising, offering 1 on 1 services, and more, I knew there were plenty of opportunities to make money blogging.
My Tax Refund in 2014 Was Exactly $800I had already been saving up for my "escape" from corporate life for quite some time, but for some reason this cash infusion that year had me extra motivated to get serious about putting my plan into motion.
Since I already had saved up enough to go almost an entire year without income, I decided to deploy this extra money towards actually getting my business started.
Here's the breakdown of how I spent my money (I didn't end up spending all $800), and the advice I would give someone that's looking to set up the foundation for an online business, while still being employed at their 9 to 5.
Domain Name and Hosting for 1 year: ~$100In order to have a website, you obviously need a name for it.
Since I had planned to initially focus a lot on offering 1 on 1 services and membership packages through my site, I wanted to go with a more "formal" sounding website and business name. Ben (my friend and business partner) and I ended up going with the name VTX Capital for our business. Looking back two years later, I wish we would have chosen a more blog-sounding name, but that's okay.
Some tips for choosing your domain name:
When you go to buy your domain and hosting, you don't need to pay as much up front as we did. Since we knew we were willing to commit to at least a year in blogging and online business, Ben and I chose the lengthier package in order to save money.
WordPress Theme: $50I will never understand how these are as cheap as they are, but I'm not complaining. A "theme" is basically just a general design for your blog. That means you don't actually need to know anything about coding or web design in order to get started with your blog, which is huge. Without a decent theme, your blog will basically be a wall of text that no one wants to read.
There are a lot of free themes out there, but I think you're much better off making the small investment in a paid theme. Our theme was only $50 dollars, and gave our site a much more professional look than if we had gone with a free theme.
See what I mean:
How you present yourself goes a long way towards establishing credibility with your readers, which is why we decided to go with a paid theme. It's infinitely better than anything we could have designed ourselves, so for 50 bucks it was a steal.
LLC Registration Fees: $100You'll hear differing opinions about when you should officially set up your blog as a business entity, depending on who you ask.
Ben and I wanted to do everything "by the book" when we got started, so we registered VTX Capital as a Limited Liability Company (LLC) in Virginia long before we even started pulling in an income from our site. Sure, it meant shelling out $100 early on in the process, but we knew we were serious about pursuing this and wanted to do it the right way.
I'm not a legal expert by any means, which is part of the reason why we wanted to file and make us as "legit" as possible from early on. We wanted to make sure our bases were covered.
Disclaimer: You should consult a lawyer with any questions you have about setting up your blog as a business.
Related read: Blogging and Taxes – What You Need To Know
Lawyer Fees for Reviewing Our Operating Agreement: $200You most likely do NOT need to go this far if you are just starting out. We could have waited, but I don't regret getting this out of the way early.
An operating agreement is an agreement among limited liability company (LLC) members (me and Ben) which governs the LLC's business, and each member's financial and managerial rights and duties. This was important for Ben and I to do since a) this wasn't a 1 man operation, and b) I was doing more of the work at the beginning and Ben was fronting our ongoing expenses.
Again, we just wanted to be safe and have a lawyer review everything to make sure there wouldn't be any surprises later. The way we looked at it, it was easier to get it done at the beginning BEFORE there was a lot of money (and therefore emotions) involved.
Total Cost For *Us* to Start an Online Business: $450Again, you can get away with spending MUCH less. I knew from the get-go that our online business was going to be a long term project, so that's how Ben and I treated it.
If you are first just looking to start a blog to make some money on the side, you can start by just purchasing your domain, hosting, and (ideally) a paid theme. Everyone's online business journey is different and unique, so take things at your own pace and do what feels right for you.
Fast Forward to NowStarting an online business was the best decision that I have ever made. Life is good.
After putting my tax refund money towards getting things set up, then spending a few months writing/learning/social media-ing, I finally took the leap from my 9 to 5 on August 1, 2014.
Since then, there have been many ups and downs, and a LOT of trial and error. Our business model has shifted from primarily 1 on 1 client work to now a heavier focus on promoting affiliate products and developing other passive (and scaleable) income streams. I really like where our business is headed, and I couldn't be happier.
When Ben and I first started, I went many months wondering if I had made the right decision to quit my steady paying job, but eventually everything started to finally click. I stuck with it and kept learning something new every day, and eventually our income started to reflect the work we were putting in.
I now earn enough from my online business to live comfortably, and the best part is- I work for myself! I cannot begin to tell you how liberating it feels to finally be able to say that. At 27 years old, I can't imagine myself ever going back to a regular 9 to 5 job.
Although I vastly underestimated how hard entrepreneurship would actually be, I still encourage others to give it a shot.
If you're tired of what you are doing, it's up to YOU to make a change!Since we have learned so much over the past two years about blogging and online entrepreneurship, Ben and I recently launched another blog, BreakingTheOnePercent.com. That's where we share content related to helping other online entrepreneurs grow their businesses (we still sprinkle some personal finance stuff there, too). Between the two sites, we've got plenty to keep us busy, but we are loving every minute of it.
How much are you getting back for your tax refund this year? What do you plan on doing with it?

The Easiest Way to Start a Beauty Video Blog for Your Business and Make Money
Getting video blogs into your business marketing mix adds an extra vigour to your brand presence and authority. Humans are visual by nature and will generally spend as much time on a video blog as they would on a site that's only texts and images.
Aside from the potential to establish you and your business as an industry leader, video blogging helps you connect more at a personal level with your prospective customer as seeing you in video is more like meeting you physically. Here are things to do when thinking of starting a video blog for your business.
Identify your demographics and study their lifestyles, wants, dislikes, favorite dressing styles, language nuances et cetera. This will help you present the appropriate visuals and craft a more engaging posts or script in a way that can better relate with and respond to.
A video blog has a feel of being live and is more faster-paced than a text and image blog. Therefore, you must creatively find ways to be interesting and engaging to sustain the viewer's interest and keep them stay tuned for the next broadcast. Any hint of boredom and your traffic statistics will start nose diving faster than any other marketing platform.
Even though you can't see them, remember there's someone at the other end of the camera listening to you and watching every non-verbal cues you deliberately or inadvertently communicate. They'll be asking questions too in the mind, even though you can't hear it to immediately respond. So, think of a video blog as basically a conversation and get imaginative about all the possible questions and issues your audience might want to raise. Answer them in your posts and keep the flow of communication going.
Typically, a video blog post should be about three to five minutes. If your recording is extending beyond that time, think of how to edit it to the ideal length by, for example, pairing the video with texts that highlight some of the points.
You can also do a longer video post of about 15 to 20 minutes, but it must really be interesting to hold the viewer's interest down for that long. Otherwise, they may leave and won't bother about ever returning to your blog site again.
Your customers too will come to trust and rely on you more. But like everything in life, things could go wrong sometimes, such as a worker getting injured or someone stealing some of your important work equipment. You should be adequately prepared for unforeseen circumstances by getting the right business insurance policy cover for your beauty business.
Once you've achieved some success with your video blogging, it will instantly and positively rub off on both your online and offline business profile and profit margins. Having a proactive mindset in how you market your business is what's necessary for success in this day and age and engaging your audience through video is just a part of the puzzle.
Readers, please share, so other potential vloggers discover how to go about being successful at making a video blog.

You should already know that earning money with a blog does not happen overnight. It takes time, consistent publishing of great content, and unique smart ideas to make a blog take off. Depending on the niche you want to get in, ranking in search engines might be tough, and often requires strong SEO skills.
But what happens if you need money for your daily expenses? Or what if you need money to pay the hosting fees and tools required to run a blog? This is where most people turn to freelancing to help pay the bills.
Freelancing is an excellent way of earning some bucks while you build a blog at the same time. With the money earned, you can then speed up the process of content creation, link building, hiring a pro designer, or whatever you think would be a wise investment of your hard-earned dollars.
I was one of those people who turned to freelancing while I built my blog, and this is how I earned my first $600o
I started my first blog back in 2015. I had no money and no knowledge of how to start a blog, but I had two very important things: Patience and determination. I knew, just from the beginning, that starting a blog was going to be a long journey and that I needed some money to pay tools and hosting fees, so I decided to offer services on Fiverr.com and Upwork (formerly Odesk).
I started as a writer. At that time I had a lot of work, writing for other blogs and for mine but it was very helpful because I learned how to write for search engines (on-page SEO) and a ton about keyword research.
In the first two months, I earned +$600, and that was the jump start of my business. I invested literally ALL the money I earned into my website. I paid premium keyword tools, WordPress plugins, themes, hired writers, etc. That investment produced higher rankings for my website, UX increased significantly, and most important, revenue also increased allowing me to earn money in "almost-passive mode".
So, you get the point – even if you don't have two cents to rub together, you can figure out how to earn extra money and then invest it in your own business. That's my suggestion if you are starting with a low budget.
There are many other ways to get quick cash, but I found freelancing the easiest one and the most legit.
It might be a great way to earn extra on the side to fund your blogging passion – but it doesn't come without a little work on your part.
1. Self-disciplineThe most important factor in my opinion. Becoming a freelancer means you are going to need a tremendous amount of self-discipline because you're going to be logging your own hours.
If you're someone who doesn't have a lot of self-discipline, does not pay attention to details and can't keep a consistent schedule, it's going to be really hard on you and going to be even harder for your clients.
This is where I tell you to reconsider your position, especially if you don't meet those qualifications. Someone who is easily distracted could make freelancing a very challenging career. Even if freelancing is something that you will do just for a few months, you need to take it seriously. Remember that your name is your personal brand, and people will remember you in the future.
2. Investment on tools of the tradeFreelancing also requires a significant investment on your part regarding resources. Being able to buy the tools of the trade, being able to replace them at the drop of the hat, all of these things are super important, so you have to be in a position to where financially this makes sense.
Having the best tools will give you a competitive advantage upon other freelancers.
But consider this: just buying these tools, will not be sufficient. You will have to learn how to use them and if you develop a personal strategy with them, there will be a high probability that your success will come true.
Some tools I recommend:
Here at ProBlogger there are some useful guides that will help you out to learn about SEO and writing:
3. PersonalityIf you're someone who is very introverted, it's not that you can't do it, but the challenge for you will be new client acquisition.
If you're introverted but you are a master of SEO or social media, then this could be less difficult for you regarding client acquisition. Or if you are willing to outsource or partner with someone who is very sales and marketing oriented, that could be a great proposition for you. You will have to leave money on the table, but having 70% of somethings is better than 100% of nothing.
If this person can get you deals and close at a higher rate than you could, it is probably for the best. If not, you might have to reconsider doing this full-time because the reality is that the marketplace is very saturated and very noisy. It is going to be tough for someone who can't come outside himself to be competitive there.
4. Work quality. Are you delivering any extra?Quality work matters, but it's not going to speak for itself, it's not going to sell itself, and if you can't get in front of it, you need someone who can. Otherwise, you are going to lose to your loudest competitor. Remember this: Showing up matters.
People are not hunting you down for this work so you can't be naรฏve and you can't be romantic about it.
As I said, there are lots of freelancers out there providing excellent services. For example, I have hired my own writers and designers from Upwork and Fiverr with outstanding results.
Just take a look at what other freelancers are selling, and see if you can add any extra to that service.
Always be honest with your clients, set expectations and deliver what you offer. It's very hard to gain the trust of your clients and very easy to lose it all of a sudden.
5. SalespersonshipSalespersonship matters, oh my god it really does. Your talent is not the variable of your success there, it's that actually salespersonship matters because the marketplace decides and showing up is how you get things done.
It doesn't matter if you are the nicest person in the room. If you don't go out to the dance floor and ask a girl to dance, being the nicest guy in the room isn't going to do a lot for you.
Getting money really matters as a freelancer and so instead of waxing poetic about how good you are, it's about how good you are at selling.
If It doesn't make you any money, it doesn't make sense.
I will encourage you to figure out if you are the best person to sell your brand and to get new clients (you can start with browsing the ProBlogger Jobs board), whether you need a partner with somebody, or whether you need to use an agency of some kind.
There are ones like Aquent and Vitamin Talent, that help freelancers find clients or even find full-paid positions if they want that, or even remote telecommuting project based jobs. All these things are an avenue to overcome that particular obstacle or weakness. Then, you can get better at selling if it's in your personality, but if it's not, I would say just outsource that weakness.
If freelancing is right for you, it can be very lucrative. It can be very practical, and it could be the beginning of financial freedom.
If you have a question about freelancing or working with difficult clients, leave that in the comment section. I would love to hear your doubts and help you out.

We kicked off The Business of Blogging series with a little bit of tough love in the post Think Like a Boss!
Today, we're shifting gears and sharing some #MondayMotivation! Here goes…
How do you make money blogging? That's the most asked, most repeated question in nearly every blogging community.
And there's advice around every corner of the web: SEO strategies, image sizes, platforms, sharing schedules, and so on.
We want to let you in on a little secret though.
How do you make money blogging?
Well, it's not about the tips, tricks, and techniques.
That's part of your marketing strategy, for sure, but the key to making money as a blogger lies in building an audience that generally cares about you and what you have to say.
It's all about your audience.
By building an audience that likes you, that trusts you and what you have to say, and that's genuinely invested in you and your work, only then will you be able to make money.
It's no longer enough to think of it as monetizing your blog. It's most accurate to say you're monetizing your influence.
We've talked a lot about how to earn an income from your blog. We've mentioned methods such as:
When it comes down to it, though, none of those will sell unless you already have an audience that trusts you.
And here's where the motivation comes in: The best way to build an audience is by being 100 percent YOU! Write from the heart. Share meaningful photos. Cover topics that inspire you. You'll find that, in turn, you touch the hearts and inspire an audience.
No, your audience won't ever be everyone. No one is for everyone. By being truly authentic in your work, you'll attract the right people. Your audience will be comprised of those who feel an affinity for you.
Then, once you've assembled your tribe, you can start to implement monetization strategies, as long as you choose ones that remain true to you and true to your audience.
How?
Here are a few of our favorite tips:
To turn your blog into a business that actually makes money, you must create your best work. Only through being true to you–consistently–can you build an audience that trusts you enough to buy from you!
