This is the Sad Truth About How Most Banks Make Money and What You Can Do About It

Banks, like any other business, need to make a profit. While you can't fault banks for wanting to improve their bottom line, sometimes it comes at your personal expense through unnecessary or hidden fees. But, if you're aware of how most banks make money, you can end up saving a ton of money in the long-run.

Deposits

"The largest source by far of funds for banks is deposited; money that account holders entrust to the bank for safekeeping and use in future transactions, as well as modest amounts of interest," says Stephen D. Simpson, CFA. "Generally referred to as 'core deposits,' these are typically the checking and savings accounts that so many people currently have." There are also deposits into CD deposits and money markets as well."

Banks then use the money that you deposit to issue loans to other customers. However, Simpson adds, "While people will typically maintain accounts for years at a time with a particular bank, the customer reserves the right to withdraw the full amount at any time." Just keep in mind that when it comes to CDs, you may get hit with a penalty if you withdraw your money before it matures.

Interest

Banks also make money on the interest that they charge for a loan — whether it's a small business loan, mortgage, or line of credit. If you don't have the best credit score you'll be charged a higher interest rate. For example, the average interest rate for those with great credit is around 10 percent for unsecured loans, while those with poor credit can be between 18 percent and 36 percent.

Before applying for a loan, it would be in your best interest to improve your credit score, find a co-signer, consider getting a secured loan, and always shop around for the best interest rates. To make this process easier on your yourself, use tools like this Personal Loan Payment Calculator from NerdWallet so that you view your estimated interest rate and payments.

Fees

One of the most annoying, and infuriating, ways that banks make money is through fees — mainly with the ATM and overdraft fee. In fact, JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America made $6 billion in ATM and overdraft fees in 2015 alone.

Banks are also known for the following annoying and sneaky fees like:

  • Account closing fee. Typically, this occurs if you close your account before a certain period of time, so if you do decide to close your account, at least wait until after that minimum period.
  • Paper statement fees. Banks charge you if you decide to receive paper statements in the mail. The easiest way to avoid this is by going paperless — which is not only more convenient since you have real-time info, it's better for the environment too.
  • Monthly or annual statement fees. Banks, such as Bank of America, charge $12 a month as a maintenance fee. That fee is waived if you maintain a specified balance in your account. Other banks will charge you a monthly or annual maintenance fee.
  • Teller fees. If you primarily e-banking, you may be charged around $8 a month to make deposits or withdraws from a teller.
  • Returned deposit fee. If make a deposit and that check bounces, you could get hit with this fee. The good news is that many smaller banks waive this fee.
  • Foreign transaction fee. If you travel abroad and make a purchase with a card, you may get charged an additional percentage. Some banks, such as Capital One's Venture program, don't have these transaction fees.
  • Lost card fee. If your card is lost or stolen, you may be charged for a replacement. PNC, for instance, charges $7.50 to replace a card.
  • Redeeming rewards points fee. We all love earning rewards from our bank, but sometimes they charge us for redeeming those points. Wells Fargo charges a $24 processing fee for each airline ticket that's issued through its rewards vendor. This fee isn't common, but always read the fine print when comparing rewards programs.
  • Returned mail fee. Some banks will charge you for undelivered mail. However, if you go paperless, this fee shouldn't be a concern.
  • Inactivity fees. If your account has been dormant, the bank may charge you a fee. If you set-up a recurring transfer or bill payment, this would get around this fee.
  • Interchange fees. If you're a merchant that processes credit cards you'll have to pay an interchange fee. The price varies depending on the type of merchant account that you have, but using companies that charge a flat fee for global transactions or using new payment options like bitcoin can lower these costs.
  • Investments

Banks, like any other business, make investments. Even though the Glass-Steagall Act was repealed, there are regulations on how much banks can invest. So, don't worry about your bank losing your life's saving on poor investment ideas.

How You Can Eliminate Fees and Charges

I've given you a couple pointers above on how you can avoid paying unnecessary banks fees and charges, but here's a rundown on the best ways to eliminate these costs forever.

    Shop around.

It's not uncommon for banks to offer free-checking accounts, along with no monthly, overdraft, or minimum balance fees. At the very least your bank should allow you to do things like opt-out of overdraft protection. In this case, the transaction is denied if you don't have enough money in your account.

    Go digital.

Unlike the old days of receiving statements in the mail and manually tracking your activity, most banks have apps or mobile wallets that provide transaction alerts, daily balance updates, and the ability to transfer funds to another party for nothing. Better yet, you may even be able to avoid ATM fees since you can pay people using your mobile wallet.

    Use your bank's ATM network.

Speaking of ATM fees, you can avoid them by only using the ATMs that are in your bank's network. This shouldn't be a problem with banks like Chime who have a large network of 24,000 ATMs.

    Use direct deposit.

Banks, such as HSBC, will waive its monthly maintenance fee if you make a direct deposit at least once per payment cycle.

    Negotiate.

Banks want to keep their best customers, and if you fit the bill, then don't hesitate to negotiate when you want a fee waived.

    Link your accounts.

If you have all of you accounts linked together, like you checkings, savings, CDs, and investments, it makes it easier to automate everything from paying your bills to putting money into your emergency savings fund. It also prevents banks from charging you minimum balance or inactivity fees.

    Why Blog?

Periodically people ask me, "Should I blog?" Some may already be blogging and wonder if they should continue. Others may write in other contexts and wonder if they should add blogging to what they already do. Still others desire to grow in their writing and wonder if blogging would help them do that.

There are many reasons people start a blog. Some do so as a way to make money. Perhaps they sell ads or promote products on their blog. Others might blog to grow and develop their platform. Tim Challies wrote an article recently about this, advocating that blogging is a good thing to do simply for the sake of blogging, not as a step to something else.

I started blogging as a way to communicate with friends and family far away about the life of my oldest son when he was first born. Blogging then was recently gaining traction and it sounded like a fun new thing to try. I loved it and it awakened a love for writing which had been buried in the responsibilities and duties of adult life. After a while, I started writing for other websites and publication and couldn't blog as frequently as I once did. Blogging has changed a lot since the first post I wrote. Some wonder if it's even worth doing. Some have even declared that blogging is dying or is already dead. Other authors I know hate blogging. But I still love blogging and here's why.

My blog is my writing home. It's where I can be myself and be most comfortable. If you were to come into my physical home, I'd probably be barefoot. There'll likely be nerf darts scattered in the corners of every room. You'll see piles of books on every available surface, each of which I am in the middle of reading. And if it's a Saturday, I might still be in my pajamas!

In a similar way, on my blog I can be myself. I don't have the constraints of word count, topic, or the concern about whether it's the type of post people are looking to read. I can play around with a new topic or technique. I can write poetry or tell a story. I don't have to construct a list (5 Reasons to ____) or provide some defined take away. One of my friends says that when she reads my blog, she hears my voice most clearly than any other place I write.

I also think having a blog is helpful because it provides a place for people to come and visit. If I met someone in real life at the grocery store, the kids sports practice, or at church, we might enjoy spending time together. Each time we see each other we might learn more about each other. But if I were to invite that person to my home, then they'd really get to know me better. They'd see me in my element. Likewise, if someone reads something I wrote on another website and they liked it and wanted to read more, they can visit me at my blogging home and learn more about me than just the three sentence bio at the end of an article.

Writing helps me think. I don't know what I think about something until I write it. Blogging helps me think through the things going on in my life. It helps me practice applying the gospel to all areas of my life. I often experiment here with a topic that I later expand into an article for another place. Blogging gives me regular writing practice which only serves to help me improve in the craft of writing.

Blogging has changed a lot since that first post I wrote almost twelve years ago. But I've changed a lot too. And I think blogging has played a big part in that change and for that I am grateful. For all these reasons and more, I enjoy blogging and plan to continue. How about you? Do you blog? And why?

Blogging Vs Affiliate Marketing Vs eCommerce: Which Will Make You More Money?

Blogging Vs Affiliate Marketing Vs eCommerce

Blogging Vs Affiliate Marketing Vs eCo mmerce

Blogging, affiliate marketing, and eCommerce are the three most popular ways to make money online. They sometimes work separately, partially together, or all under one umbrella. But whatever the case may be, they each use different models to generate income.

Some may argue that blogging is the most profitable, once you've amassed a large following and are now generating significant income from advertisement, sponsored posts, and even consulting.

Another sect would argue that affiliate marketing is the most profitable because every successful conversion recorded earns you money. For instance, for every successful referral you get on iPages, you could earn up to $105 per sign up, making an affiliate marketer that drives 1,000 sign ups monthly to earn up to $105,000 dollars a month, with even less than 10,000 page views a day.

While you may ponder on the possibility of this, hundreds of affiliate marketers make thousands of dollars monthly from affiliate marketing, and some even make as much as $400,000 dollars monthly.

The potential of affiliate marketing causes many individuals to run towards its revenue model.

Lastly, another sect believes eCommerce is the most profitable because you can control the sales of your items, its profit, and also start making money from day one. They know that if they sell one item, it's all theirs and no one else's. So they target a lot of monthly sales in order to meet their marks.

So Then, What Are The Similarities Between, Blogging Vs Affiliate Marketing Vs eCommerce?
  • They are all run on the internet
  • They have high earning potentials
  • They are easy to start working on immediately
  • They require some similar skill sets like being able to create ads, drive traffic to a landing page and other internet marketing skills
  • They can be started for a relatively low price

    Advantages Of Starting A Blog

When you blog, your intent is to consistently pass valuable information to people over a long period of time. During this period, you get them to trust you, establish yourself as a professional in the niche you're writing about, and so, makes it a lot easier for you to sell your services to them.

Blogging will help you successfully run a service-based business, as most of your audience may be people who will require your services at some point. As you consistently pass valuable information, you build a wider audience base, get a lot more customers, and grow your revenues in the process.

Depending on what your blog niche, your audience base, their engagement rate, and your SEO ranking is, your monthly income could be far lesser than an affiliate marketer's or could be far higher.

Most people are also drawn towards blogging because it's very easy to do and requires a very small initial investment.

In fact, you can start a blog today for as very little as $3.95 a month. The two steps to achieve this are:

See Also: 5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Starting A Blog

    Disadvantages Of Starting A Blog

Growing a successful blog is no easy task. It will require a lot of your time, dedication, research, and effort for it to be worthwhile on the long-run. Also, you must have great writing skills to be able to pass valuable information to your audience, else, they won't feel connected to your articles, will perceive little or no value in them, and will more likely move over to the next blog.

Blogging is also one of the worst ways to make money on the short-term. It's rather a long-term strategy and requires valuable time, attention, and effort on the part of the blogger.

Depending on what niche you're blogging about, your advertising value and the services you intend to run from it may be worth so much or next to nothing. So it's important you choose a niche carefully before you set out to start a blog.

    Advantages Of Affiliate Marketing

Since affiliate marketing is heavily based on performance metrics and compensations for every successful product, service, or sign up you can get for a brand, you don't have to worry about customer service, sales tax, warehousing, shipping, payment processing, and many other time-consuming activities.

Also, you could get as much as 3% to 85% of a successful conversion, depending on the affiliate program you joined, and sometimes, you can get the percentages every month for life!

Most affiliate marketers worldwide make thousands of dollars monthly. Some make hundreds of thousands of dollars, and then again, there are others who make a few hundreds or tens of dollars monthly.

Depending on how you're promoting the affiliate programs you joined, whether via email or not, your income will be highly variable.

See Also: How To Make Up To $1,000 Monthly Online Without Google Ads

    Disadvantages Of Affiliate Marketing

The major problem with affiliate marketing is that you lack complete control. An affiliate partner could delist you at any time, drop their commission rates, offer shitty products that could affect your reputation, and they could even go out of business all the same.

They could also impose strict rules on how you generate your sales. Many affiliate programs outrightly ban Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising to generate leads. So if you spend a lot of money on Google or Facebook ads, they could drop you as an affiliate and all the money you've spent so far would go to total waste.

Lastly, when you refer a person to an affiliate partner, they get all their emails, phone numbers, addresses, and more after the purchase is successful. Meaning they could remarket several services to them over and over again, making you lose out on a lot of potential future income from your referrals.

    Advantages Of eCommerce

Running an eCommerce site gives you complete control over the products and services you sell. You get to handle customer service, give discounts as you wish, collect the customer's email addresses, and also re-market several other products to them.

Whether you're selling eBooks, online courses, fashion items, tech gadgets, and more, scaling up an eCommerce site can be a lot faster than a blog and an affiliate marketing site.

See Also: How To Start An E-Commerce Business In Nigeria: The Comprehensive Cost

    Disadvantages Of eCommerce

The largest disadvantage of eCommerce is that despite scaling-up really fast, you may make zero profits for many years. This is even worse for countries in Africa, where the largest eCommerce companies in Nigeria are yet to break-even, despite having spent million of Dollars promoting their brands.

Also, running an eCommerce business requires a whole lot of money. You'd have to purchase a lot of items for resale, handle customer complaints, be faced with a lot of product returns, and even spend a lot of money on managing day-to-day operations and staff salaries.

With all these in place, running a successful eCommerce business in Africa is more difficult than ever.

Which Should You Then Go For?

Blogging, affiliate marketing, and eCommerce have three different models. Before you decide which you should go for, you need to take note of these three areas:

  • eCommerce – I want to start making money today (but could be no profits)
  • Affiliate Site – I want my business to be low-risk and still be making money even if I'm not there. (Could be 100% profits and very substantial)
  • Blogging – I want to be an established figure (expert) and to create an audience in the process. Money is not important to me now, but later. (Could be the best bet you make)
  • By reviewing these three points, your current preferences should determine which plunge you should take.

    My Personal Advice

While blogging, affiliate marketing, and eCommerce are three different models, the best way to maximize your income on the internet is to combine all three.

When you pass valuable information on your blog, asides offering advert space and consulting gigs, you could also promote products from your affiliate partners, based on an in-depth review you'd post periodically, and then sell an online course, eBook, or a product that your readers really want and that compliments your articles with information that they can't easily find online.

By combining the three models together, you could run a full-fledged online business whose revenue streams are not limited to one or two channels, but are highly dynamic, because of the multiple revenue channels you're ultimately open to.

So to get started with this model, these two articles below that I've previously written contains everything you'd need to know on how to start a blog and which affiliate programs you can join today:

What are your thoughts on these three online business models that will make you more money? Let me know by leaving a comment below.

How Instagram queens make money out of you

Cannes. They dress like celebrities and can increasingly be spotted on the world's catwalks and red carpets. Meet the "influencers", the most famous people you've never heard of.

For 70 years, the Cannes film festival has been a key event on any A-lister's calendar. But move over Nicole Kidman, there's a new breed of star in town: social media personalities invited purely on the grounds of their huge Instagram or YouTube followings.

Sharing the red carpet with Kidman and Will Smith this week have been beauty bloggers like 17-year-old Amanda Steele (2.8 million YouTube subscribers) and Swiss Instagrammer Kristina Bazan (2.4 million followers).

Maja Malnar, who makes a living from her blog and 264,000-strong Instagram following, admits she's struggled to explain her job as a "social media influencer" to her mother back in Slovenia.

Years ago she started posting snaps of her daily outfits on the photo app and blogging about her travels. These days she's part of a growing industry known as "influencer marketing", whereby brands seek to harness the power of powerful web-users by slipping their products into their posts.

"It's a good business, I can't complain," Malnar told AFP.

The petite blonde, who is in her twenties but declined to give her age, is set to walk the red carpet Friday in a tie-up with MasterCard and the designer who provided her dress. She'll then have to post about it.

"We're entrepreneurs. We saw a gap in the market and we capitalised on it," says her friend Lorna Andrews, a British ex-air hostess who modestly calls herself a "mid-tier influencer" with 464,000 Instagram followers.

Cannes is no stranger to those famous for being famous -- socialites like Paris Hilton have been turning up for years -- and brands have long recognised the festival's power as a marketing opportunity.

Top-end labels and jewellers have for decades dressed the stars for free at Cannes, knowing they will be snapped there by the waiting paparazzi.

But the arrival of the "influencer" at the world's biggest film festival -- and at international fashion weeks -- is a new phenomenon.

    - Ordinary Janes and Joes -

About 18 months ago Edouard Hausseguy, a 27-year-old Frenchman, realised the money-making potential of people whose photos, restaurant tips and beauty tutorials are followed by millions online, even though most would not recognise them on the street.

He set up his agency Hemblem to represent anyone with a following of 30,000 and up -- negotiating deals with brands, and then taking a cut.

"Those people are people like us, but they speak to millions of people with one picture," he told AFP in an interview on a yacht moored at Cannes, where he's hoping his influencers will benefit from the presence of top brands and the media.

For the festival, Hemblem has filled a villa with influencers who are splitting their time between glamorous events and furiously posting online, whether it's about designer labels or a charity for Syrian children.

Co-founder Thomas Elliott said brands were catching on to the power of a recommendation from Instagrammers to shift products from the shelves.

"Jane next door or Joe next door is probably better for product placement, as people can identify with these people," he said.

It's possible to get paid for a single post -- "the fee depends on the size of the following", said Joe Gagliese, co-founder of Viral Nation, a rival agency based in Toronto.

"It could be $100,000 if you have over five million followers."

With 13 million followers apiece, supermodels Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski rank as the true Instagram queens of Cannes.

Their accounts offer red carpet glamour and a peek behind the scenes, like Hadid sipping champagne while preparing for a premiere. Partner brands are carefully name-checked: make-up by Dior, jewellery by Bulgari.

Further down the food-chain, posts by smaller fish in the "influencer" pond still tell of a life of cocktails and beautiful clothes -- but the reality may be a little less glamorous. (AFP)

There are constant worries of where the next event or brand tie-up might come from, and some re-sell the clothes they are gifted to make ends meet.

And behind the glitz there is a constant pressure to post that Andrews and Malnar say can be stressful.

Neither expects to do this job forever. Women aged 18-30 make up the bulk of their followings, and unless these shift there'll come a day when they won't match their young demographic.

Youngsters' heavy use of Instagram is a worry for mental health experts, who warn these glimpses into the glamorous lives of others encourage depression and anxiety by prompting a "compare and despair" attitude.

There's a constant stream of appreciative comments under posts by Hadid and Ratajkowski, but also wistful ones.

Under a video of Hadid wearing custom Roberto Cavalli, one user sighed: "Can I just be her for one day?" (AFP)

How to start a fashion blog, keep it going & even make money(!)

The fashion blogging landscape is in flux. When this medium first came on the scene, style bloggers were considered wannabes and either ignored or disdained by the mainstream fashion media. Today, a successful fashion blogger can get front-row seats at Fashion Week events, collaborate with famous labels and book lucrative partnerships with big-name brands. But if you're late to the game, it can be tricky to decide how to start a fashion blog that will stand out, grow steadily and feel authentic.

I launched my own fashion blog nearly a decade ago and although much has changed since then, the essentials remain the same. If you're hoping to create a personal style, fashion advice or otherwise sartorially driven blog, here's a step-by-step plan to get you started.

How to start a fashion blog in just 4 steps
  • Get focused.
  • Pick a name and buy your domain.
  • Choose a blog builder.
  • Learn to speak Google's language.
  • Blogs require talent, hard work and perseverance. But before you can even begin to work out the kinks in your daily hustle, you need to set up your infrastructure. And make some key decisions. Read on to learn how.

    1. Get focused

Wanna know how to start a fashion blog that has a better-than-average chance of failure? Create one that's totally without focus.

Your outfits may be on fleek and your closet may be brimming with amazing finds but unless you focus, your WIWT posts will get lost in the shuffle.

Do you live in an unusual climate or exotic locale? Make that part of your blog's brand. Are you a mother of three or a new-to-the-workforce college grad? Include those identifiers when you position yourself.

Want inspiration? Read Cora Harrington's account of how she started The Lingerie Addict.

How to Start a Fashion Blog PursePhoto: Visualhunt.com 2. Pick a name and buy your domain

This is a doozy. Naming a blog is like naming a band — high stakes, creatively challenging and downright nerve-wracking. Be sure to include a nod to your focus in your blog's name, if possible, and pick something that feels unique to you.

If you can find a great name for your fashion blog that ends in .com, great! Get it. But don't limit yourself to only looking at .com domain names. They've been around for a long time so it can be hard to find a short, memorable and relevant .com web address.

Why not get creative with the name of your fashion blog? Try .blog, .life or .shop.

These new domains work just like .com, but are more descriptive. Just add your blog name on the other side of the dot for a web address that speaks for itself.

Once you've found a good domain name, snap it up — GoDaddy has options for less than $20 per year.

    3. Choose a blog builder

The blog platform you choose won't just impact how your blog looks, feels and runs behind-the-scenes. It also has an impact on how quickly and easily you can prepare and share your content. Tumblr has cachet, but can be awkward if you want to build a real community. Blogger is easy and free, but doesn't let you dig as deep or customize as easily.

Having tried several platforms myself, I strongly recommend WordPress.

    Managed WordPress Article Content Ad

WordPress has the greatest number of themes — here are 20 of the best ones for fashion blogs — so you can give your blog a look that matches your style. The huge variety of plugins available for WordPress make it easy for you to expand and customize your blog's functionality. And WordPress has a versatile, intuitive backend that makes it fairly simple to manage your content and all the extras that make it shine. Speaking of which …

    4. Learn to speak Google's language

I know, I know. When do we get to the photo shoots and freebies? Soon, friends, I promise. But first, you absolutely MUST learn the basics of search engine optimization (SEO) to make sure Google sees your posts. Otherwise they'll never get indexed, which means they'll never get seen or read. Don't worry, it's not hard — it just takes a little well-spent time. Yoast, a wildly popular WordPress plugin, can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.Now for the advanced tips.

How to start a fashion blog with staying power

Promising new blogs spring up every day, but even more of them wither and die. Starting a fashion blog is the easy part. But how to start a fashion blog with staying power? It's finding a way to keep it relevant, compelling, unique and fun over the long haul that poses a real challenge. Here are some best practices:

Keep a running list of topics.

The first thing I tell anyone who asks how to start a fashion blog is that an outfits-only blog is a tough sell in this market. Hopefully, your niche includes a relatively broad scope that encompasses trends, shopping tips, style advice and other non-outfit topics. If it does, you'll want to keep a running list of blog post ideas. Any time you come across an article of interest, catch wind of a fab (or bizarre) new trend or have a flash of inspiration, write it down. There will be times when writer's block sets in and you'll need a ready supply of inspiration.

Create an editorial calendar (and stick to it!).

Once you've got a list of topics, settle on a regular posting schedule. The best way to start a fashion blog outright is to post at least three times per week, ideally on weekdays. You can ramp up to daily posts if and when you want to. If you intend to post on multiple topics, build out a calendar that spreads those topics across the weeks and months. Make Monday your trend day, Wednesday an outfit post and Friday your advice column, for instance.

Read more about creating an editorial calendar here.

    Be active on social media.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but this step is so essential it still merits a call-out.

For fashion bloggers, Instagram is absolutely crucial, with Snapchat, Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter following, in order of importance.

You don't have to do them all, but pick two or three in addition to your blog and populate your feeds with gusto. In addition to sharing content from your fashion blog (and linking back to it from your social profiles, natch), be sure to share fashion content you like from other fashion bloggers and brands. That's how you start to build a following, make friends and put yourself on the path to making money with your fashion blog.

How to start a fashion blog that makes money

How bloggers earn their income is the worst-kept secret in the business. Yet a surprising number of blog readers and aspiring bloggers are still mystified by the process, so here's a quick primer.

    1. Create a media kit.

Once your blog is established and has some steady traffic, you'll need to start the active outreach process. Begin by building a media kit, which is basically a resume for your blog that outlines your mission, stats and strengths. Include a short bio, a description of your blog, your social media follower counts, blog traffic stats, advertising/sponsored post rates and contact information. Oh, and at least three gorgeous images of you and your online home!

How to Start a Fashion Blog Runway2. Join an affiliate marketing network.

One of the easiest ways to earn money as a fashion blogger is through affiliate links. Start by joining a network — RewardStyle and ShopStyle Collective are two of the most popular — then begin folding affiliate links into your posts whenever you recommend products. If readers buy something after clicking on one of these links, you earn a commission on the sale.

Affiliate links are one of the easiest ways to earn money as a fashion blogger.

The vendor pays you a percentage, so it costs your readers nothing to use these links. However, the FTC requires you to divulge when you're earning money off of user actions or showcasing gifts from vendors, so be sure to craft an air-tight disclosure statement.

    3. Place ads in your posts.

Display ads on blogs aren't the big-earners they used to be, but they're still worth implementing. Carve out space in your sidebars and sacrifice some real estate at the top of your screen and you can earn money for every page view.

My personal favorite is Mediavine, since they're fully transparent, reliable and great at customer service.

Fashion bloggers also use BlogHer, Federated Media, Google AdWords and a few others, though good display services are becoming harder and harder to find. If you join an affiliate network (see #2, above), you can also grab ads for specific vendors or products and manually place them on your site. But those will pay out only if you make a sale, NOT for traffic.

    4. Go after sponsored posts and brand partnerships.

Sponsored posts generally involve being given one or more products and constructing an in-depth review with multiple photos. Brand partnerships may entail mentioning or wearing products, allowing companies to use your images in their ads, attending or appearing at events and more.

You can't start a fashion blog on Monday and cold-call Chanel on Tuesday.

You'll need to have at least six months of blogging and a decent following before you go this route. (Translation: Don't start a fashion blog on Monday and cold-call Chanel on Tuesday.) But once you've established your niche and have an impressive media kit, you can start securing sponsorships. In most cases, vendors and PR firms will find and reach out to you, but it's fine to pitch a few brands you absolutely adore.

Some bloggers even have agents negotiate on their behalf for partnerships and sponsored posts. Digital Brand Architects and Socialyte are among the faves.

Got style and guts? You got this!

Whenever anyone asks how to start a fashion blog, I tell them it takes guts, creativity and vision to succeed, especially in this market. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it! Just be smart, be patient and use these guidelines to ensure your words and images find their audience.

Why You Will Never Make Money Blogging (And How To Change That)

Why You Will Never Make Money Blogging

Let me start you off with this simple truth:

  • You will never make money as a blogger if you continue to do the wrong things.
  • Albert Einstein's great quip sums this up – "It is sheer insanity to do something over and over again and expect a different result."

Many new bloggers are lost in thoughts of being able to travel the world and spend time in expensive hotels eating the best meals. While this is a possible feat to achieve, it sure takes a lot of guts and time in getting to this place of tremendous achievement.

Daniel Lyons (Fake Steve Jobs) confirmed that, "While blogs can do many awesome things, making lots of money isn't one of them."

He was right, if you ask me.

Your blog isn't a money printing machine; rather, it's a tool used for reaching the world with your valuable products/services… and possibly making money in the process.

Of course, it takes a lot of work. You must be willing to go through the process patiently, and if you do, success will surely come.

I love Whitney Young Jr.'s great quote, "It's better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared for it."

The latter part of the quote paints a typical blogging situation- someone who has a chance at becoming one of the most respected people in the annals of the world, but loses out by reasons of unpreparedness.

In this post, I will reveal to you the seven reasons why you will never make money blogging in 2017. Aside from that, I'll also show you how you can reverse this and build a money-making blog right now.

    Are we still together?

    Let's dive in!

    1. You don't have a concrete business model.

    Concrete business model

Now, before I explain what a business model is and how to set up one for your business, let me quickly tell you why the lack of one is ruining your blogging business.

When you don't have a system or a plan that encourages or pushes you to take the necessary actions in your business, you risk losing your enthusiasm and passion which will eventually result in the death of your blog.

So what is a business model?

The term "business model" can be defined in so many ways…

For the sake of this tutorial, I will describe a business model simply as a plan or design for the successful operation of a business, the intended customer base, the identified revenue sources, products, and sources of financing.

Similarly, Wikipedia defined it as: "an abstract representation of a business, be it conceptual, textual, and/or graphical, of all core interrelated architectural, co-operational, and financial arrangements designed and developed by an organization presently and in the future, as well as all core products and/or services the organization offers, or will offer, based on these arrangements that are needed to achieve its strategic goals and objectives."

One of the mistakes often made by bloggers is in thinking that a business model is all about saying: "I want to make money."

Honestly, if you put the "making money" thing as the primary reason for starting your business, you're already doomed.

Money shouldn't be your focus when starting out online as a blogger. The focus should be on creating systems; that includes creating significant and valuable content that takes a reader from where they are to where they ought to be.

Distilling it down, a good business model will let you:

  • Identify who your target audience is.
  • Identify revenue sources.
  • Figure out how to serve your customers. (With text, videos, audios, infographics, etc.?)
  • Identify products to create that will further educate your audience on what you currently teach them via your blog posts. (Example: You can create and sell an eBook.)
  • Identify where will you get funds and how will you continue to invest in your business to stay relevant in the marketplace.
  • Find the best promotional strategies to get your business out there.
  • These are just some of the things to consider when creating a plan/model for your business.

This is a very important step when starting out as a blogger.

You must give it maximum attention.

    For further reading:

    2. You are not concerned about value.

    Making Money Blogging

Like I mentioned, you will never make a single dime blogging if you concern yourself too much about making money.

Making money from blogging does not come overnight. I've been in the internet marketing and blogging niche longer than most of you, and I've never seen anyone that launched one day and started seeing money roll in the next day.

    It doesn't happen.

Forget all those adverts hovering over the web about how Jack made $$$$$$ within 48 hours of launching his business. If it actually worked that way, everyone would be doing it.

Here's what you need to remember:

  • If you want to make real money in the real world, you need to solve real problems.
  • If you're serious about making money, learn to shift focus on wanting to be a quick and overnight success to providing a lot of value to your readers

Value is what sells you and your products, and it is what ultimately helps you to achieve your money-making goals.

According to Copyblogger, "If you don't offer customers something they dearly want, whether it's to gain some great pleasure or escape some great pain, you're not going to make any money."

    3. You are not asking the right questions.

    Ask Blogging Questions

I constantly get readers of ShoutMeLoud asking me:

  • How do I make money blogging?
  • How can I get traffic to my blog?
  • How can I build influence and get blog engagements?
  • While all these questions are great, there's always something wrong with the phrasing.

    Example:

Don't ask: "How can I get traffic?"

Ask: "Is my blog capable of getting traffic?"

A lot of the time, people come into the online space to build blogs, publish some crappy content, and splash ads all over the place expecting to make lots of money.

Well, it doesn't work like that!

You have got to push yourself really far by asking the right questions and doing the right things if you want to attract the right people in order to maybe make money blogging.

For instance, if your article headline is not engaging and compelling enough, it won't attract visitors to stop over and read the article. The same thing applies to your content; if it sucks, no one will want to engage with your blog.

You have to give people a good reason to leave your competitor's site and read yours.

    How do you do that?

It's mostly about creating informative and entertaining content that readers will find hard to ignore.

Don't do what everyone else is doing. Write in your own unique voice, and soon, people will start noticing your unique and outstanding approach.

That's when they will fall in love with you and make your blog their new dwelling place.

How To Make Your Blog A Success

If you take the time to really read through this post, you will definitely go from making nothing to making a substantial income as a blogger.
