High risk and quick money: The story of black hat SEO

No matter what it is you do, being at the top of Google is extremely valuable. If you own a dental clinic and you want more patients, being at the top of Google means that you'll be exposed to thousands of people who are looking for your services. If you run a blog and make money off of traffic, having your website show up at the top of Google will get you the traffic you need to pay your bills.

The question that comes up on this topic is "How does one get to the top of Google?" There are so many strategies to accomplish this, that a person can literally make hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, selling SEO courses. The first very basic thing to know regarding SEO is that there are 2 (and some might say 3) types of SEO that exist. You have "white hat SEO" and "black hat SEO". Some people will claim that they are "gray hat", but this is really black hat (which will be explained momentarily).

Google has guidelines that they have published for anybody who wants to build a website. If you own a website you may or may not know this, but Google expects you to follow their guidelines if you want to show up at all in their index (and thus having your website show up in the Google search engine results). When you're following these guidelines, it is said that you are "white hat". It means that everything you're doing follows what Google wants you to do. It also means that Google won't be giving you any kind of penalty for breaking their rules, and thus you're safe.

The difficulty that some might say exists with white hat SEO is that it takes time and hard work. Brian Dean of backlinko.com offers a course where he teaches people several different white hat tactics to get to the top of Google. He gives a lot of training on building the type of content on your website that will go viral, or at very least it will get you attention from other websites and help grow your brand.

Some of the white hat strategies that exist include:

  • Creating great unique content.
  • Getting PR and press for your brand.
  • Gaining attention and traffic via social media.
  • Providing accurate and valuable information.
  • Blogging as a guest on another's website.
  • Getting positive reviews across the web.
  • Placing your company information across online directories.
  • For a dentist or plumber or photographer, these things might take some time. However there are many people who love to do the things that help them boom their business. Sally Matsukawa of Toy Elephant Photography in Franklin, TN is a great example of using white hat SEO for her brand. She loves to post blogs, she enters herself into photography competitions, she's constantly shooting pictures of friends and family (some of which have websites that link back to hers), and she really just likes to be online talking about what she does. Because of what she does, Google has her ranking well for phrases like "headshot photographer Franklin TN" as well as some of her other services that she's offering.

Now, on the other side of things we have black hat SEO and gray hat SEO. People who do gray hat SEO are still not following Google's guidelines, they just claim that what they're doing isn't extremely spammy. Regardless, if it isn't white hat, it's black hat.

Black hat SEO is of course the SEO done that violates Google's guidelines. The benefit that some see in this is that it's "quick money" and "fast rankings". It's an effort to manipulate Google to make your website appear high in the search engine results with minimal effort. Google works hard to find people who use black hat SEO and knock them out of the Google index altogether.

Some of the black hat SEO tactics that exist include:

  • Buying backlinks.
  • Using your own network of websites to link to the website you want to rank.
  • Keyword stuffing.
  • Attempting to manipulate Google in any way to increase your rankings.
  • So how does this work? Well, when we look back at our example of Toy Elephant Photography, we see that Sally might take a week to prepare for a photography competition and that ends up with getting her a single link to her website. Two weeks later she decides to write a blog about her wedding photography. Meanwhile, someone who does black hat SEO is going to spend some money to buy similar links, and in much greater quantity (perhaps 10 or even more). The person who is doing black hat SEO now finds himself accomplishing the same amount of work that Sally did in a matter of minutes.

With that being said, someone who does black hat SEO can charge a roofer $4,000 every month to get him at the top of Google for a phrase like "roof repair in Nashville", knowing that the roofer is going to make $3,000 or so profit with every new roof he builds. The guy using black hat SEO is going to get him to the top of Google within 3 months and the roofer (whether he's good at his job or not) is going to be seen by hundreds of people. There are even people who do black hat SEO who are making hundreds of thousands every month on affiliate marketing.

There's somewhat of a moral dilemma that exists in this though. What happens if someone doing black hat SEO decides he's going to work for someone who produces poor results? Unfortunately this happens from time to time. When the motivation is simply money, moral integrity seems to go out the window.

For someone who does what hat SEO, this can be discouraging. However the good news is that Google works hard to get rid of spammers and people who are manipulating their search engine. They frequently update their algorithms and take manual action to penalize those who are producing poor black hat results.

In the end we all root for the guys who are making it big with good quality hard work. Google is doing the same.

Please leave a comment if you have any input on your experience with white hat SEO, black hat SEO or anything in between. Please also be sure to subscribe and share!

I spent years hustling to make ends meet until I realized something that completely changed how I earn money

DSC_3687Stefanie O'ConnellStefanie O'Connell. See Also 11 actions you can take today to start getting rich, according to a self-made millionaire The way billionaire Warren Buffett defines success has nothing to do with money How much it costs to live in the best US cities for young people

I had been waiting for permission to overcome my perceived earnings limitations instead of realizing the value of my work and seeking out the people willing to pay that price.

It was the Spring of 2012.

I was crammed into the world's tiniest tour van with six other actors and a full theatrical set, driving along a deserted highway somewhere in between Nebraska and Iowa thinking, this might not be my dream.

How could that be? I loved my job performing in musicals — whether on stage in New York City's Madison Square Garden or in an elementary school cafeteria in Okoboji, Iowa in the dead of winter — sharing the experience of live performance with audiences around the world never failed to thrill me.

But sitting there in the overcrowded van, exhausted from five months of one-night touring engagements, calculating how I was going stay within the parameters of my $54 daily per diem while saving up for the unemployment I'd be facing the following month was anything but exhilarating.

In that moment I began to accept that my love of performing was part of my passion, but maybe not the singular definition of it. I wanted more — simple things, like the freedom to plan a vacation or afford a family - not in place of performing, but in addition to it.

Unfortunately, the accepted narrative of the "starving artist" had framed the pursuit of passion as mutually exclusive from living richly. I didn't care to accept that premise though, nor did I subscribe to the idea of my bohemian struggle as some kind of pre-requisite for success, so I set out to craft a new narrative — literally.

I started writing feverishly about the delicate balance between broke reality and the beauty of a passionate life pursued. Upon arrival at the Super 8 just outside of Omaha, I signed onto the Wi-Fi to claim my small piece of the internet with a $12 domain name and free blogspot template.

Six months of sporadic internet musing and a few acting gigs later, I was coming up on yet another period of unemployment. The prospect of diving head first into survival job mode — babysitting, personal assisting, hostessing, etc. — filled me with dread, so I took the entrepreneurial plunge, dropping a grand on my then-hobby of writing about the complicated intersection of money and dreams to keep myself accountable.

A professional web design and blog coach later, I launched thebrokeandbeautifullife.com — it was Spring of 2013. By Fall of that year, I had secured a couple of side gigs writing for other bloggers in the frugal living and personal finance space- reading like crazy to develop and hone my expertise in my newfound niche.

DSC_4042Stefanie O'ConnellO'Connell in New York City.

Some of my more extreme frugal endeavors — think couchsurfing and ridesharing — garnered the attention of an editor at US News & World Report, where I soon became a regular contributor. I didn't have much of a plan, other than to break even on my $1,000 investment, but I had learned to tell my story with authenticity and passion and the momentum was starting to build around it. By mid-2014 I had a book deal with a small publisher and a full roster of writing clients, but I was still struggling to make ends meet.

Though successfully balancing freelance writing with my acting career, I was still falling short of my basic financial obligations, resigning myself to old survival jobs to get by. Inspired by the stories of other online entrepreneurs whose journeys I often saw chronicled around the web, I started challenging myself to ask for more money. First timidly, in the form of $10 to $20 pay bumps; then more aggressively, with $50 to $100 increases.

In January of 2015, a few months after the release of my book, I was approached by a client offering to pay me $2,000 for one post. Granted, it was incredibly detailed and research-heavy work, but the experience shifted my perspective on the possibilities of income potential entirely.

For so long I felt that my earnings were dictated by factors outside of myself — my degree, my job title, my experience, my employer, etc. I had been waiting for permission to overcome my perceived earnings limitations instead of realizing the value of my work and seeking out the people willing to pay that price.

Empowered by this newfound realization, I began targeting new clients, the ones who could afford to pay big bucks, enabling the pursuit of the passionate, beautiful life I had always championed and leaving broke in the dust for good. In July of 2015 I had my first ever five-figure income month. I also shot my first television episode.

Today, I'm 29 years old, I live in New York City, I'm a professional actress and a thriving entrepreneur and I absolutely adore what I do — in its entirety.

Conservative Candidate Martin Barker Decries Quebec “Money Pit”, Says C-51 Could Prevent Air India

Meet Martin Barker, Conservative candidate for Cowichan—Malahat—Langford in British Columbia. He has a blog– or, rather, had a blog. He chronicled his life as the most interesting man in Duncan, BC (the smallest city in square kilometers in Canada). He likes talking about chickens. A lot. What's more interesting is his self-proclaimed rants that include kind words to our Quebecois brothers.

    TNT_Scandal_MartinBarker_4

You'll have to excuse the ugly-looking excerpt. We retrieved his blog posts from an archive of his website. Once he was made a candidate, we assume the Conservative party took down and scrubbed his website clean. In fact, his Facebook page and website are nothing but dead links now.

So what exactly did he say in that wall of text? Barker discusses his opposition to a British Columbia Early Child Care plan. As a staunch fiscal conservative, he believes it's inappropriate for such an expense during "economic uncertainty."

After all… "BC is not Quebec, we do not and will never get the 11+ billion dollars of equalization to finance our social programs."

That could be interpreted as him stating (what he thinks) is pure fact. Nothing malicious. Yet, when you dig deeper into his other blog posts…

    TNT_Scandal_MartinBarker_1

Riding growth could indeed be a problem. Why do we have to create so many new ridings when the population grows?

If Quebec doesn't get its way, they make "a big stink." A certain, odeur de l'âne, if you will. He finds irony in Quebec's slow growth given their extensive social systems. What the hell are they spending all that money on? René Levesque shrines?

[I'm] just not impressed by how much it costs the rest of the country to have [Quebec]

Meanwhile, Barker thinks MPs could do just as well with ridings 50% bigger. Have you met current Members of Parliament? Somehow I don't think they could handle the responsibility of an extra office plant, let alone 50% bigger constituencies.

Listen. Barker isn't really a Quebec basher. He's "generally proud" of his Quebec friends and their province. What really irks him is "how much it costs the rest of the country to have them." It sure is costly to have Quebec in the federation. We should have a referendum or something about it.

Or instead, we could have another one of Barker's rants:

    TNT_Scandal_MartinBarker_2

There we go. That's perfect. We "pour money down that money pit in Quebec." Eloquent yet substantive.

The rest of the country is going to continue to want to pour money down that money pit in Quebec

If his serenade and sarabande with La Belle Province wasn't enough, there's more! Remember when Conservative MP Wai Young said Bill C-51 would have prevented the Air India bombings from happening? Martin Barker was saying that way before it was mainstream. What a trend-setter. (Thanks to Robert Jago for the screengrab of the now-deleted Facebook post)

    TNT_Scandal_MartinBarker3

All in all, Martin Barker is definitely proud of Quebec. Except all that negative stuff he pointed out.

Money men Ndamukong Suh, Marcell Dareus at center of Dolphins-Bills clash

  • Print
  • ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Ndamukong Suh and Marcell Dareus, who have become the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackles since their only prior meeting, at Detroit's Ford Field last October, will set foot on the same field again Sunday in Miami.

Not only is there intrigue as to how much each Pro Bowl lineman can disrupt his opponent's offense -- and how their performances stack up against one another -- but both mammoth tackles must continue to prove they're worth the massive contracts they landed this year.

The Miami Dolphins signed Suh to a six-year, $114 million deal in March that included $59.96 million in guaranteed money. Dareus received $60 million guaranteed as part of his six-year, $100 million extension with the Buffalo Bills, completed earlier this month.

"When you do look at the pay increases, it's clear how people are valuing these defensive tackles," Bills coach Rex Ryan said this week. "But it's really rare to get somebody like a Suh, like a Marcell Dareus -- two guys that play the run extremely well and they get after the quarterback.

"They're hard to find, those guys. They're rare guys. As my dad [former NFL coach Buddy Ryan] would always say, 'It's hard to find an unusual guy like this.' And he had Alan Page, Eric Swann and Dan Hampton through the years.

"I'm certainly happy that we have Marcell, and I'm sure Miami is certainly happy that they have Suh."

They might not be "skill position" players and are rarely mentioned in fantasy football drafts, but nobody would say Dareus or Suh lacks skill. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Suh collected 36 sacks in five seasons with the Detroit Lions. Dareus, who is 6-3, 331 pounds, notched 28.5 sacks in his first four years in Buffalo, including a career-high 10 in 2014.

"They're both big, physical, fast, athletic," Bills defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman said this week.

Dareus might edge Suh in guaranteed salary, but Suh is the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. He will earn an average of $19.062 million over the life of his deal, compared to $15.85 million for Dareus.

"I think Suh has always been one of the most explosive players in the league and his get-off is tremendous," Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "He's just such a physical force that he can wreck the whole game if you let him. He looks the same as he did in Detroit."

Well, not quite. Suh anchored the league's No. 1 run defense last year in Detroit. This season Suh has just three tackles in two games and Miami's run defense is ranked 27th.

"I think it's unacceptable," Suh said this week. "[But] you gotta respect every single team's run game. That's the first goal. We gotta go out and stop the run."

Whether he lines up over guard or center, Marcell Dareus can wreak havoc on an offense. Timothy T. Ludwig/USA TODAY Sports

Although Dareus was drafted third overall in 2011, just one year after the Lions selected Suh second overall, he's three years younger than his counterpart in Miami.

"He is a very young guy -- I think he's 25 or something like that -- so he's got a lot of football years ahead of him," Suh said this week. "I'm excited to see him play. Obviously you don't want him to have a good game against us. But every other game outside of when we play them here and when we go up there, I hope he has all the best games he can."

The New England Patriots held Dareus without a sack last week, partly because of a quick-strike passing game that saw Tom Brady get rid of the ball an average of 2.0 seconds after the snap, the NFL's second-fastest rate in Week 2.

"I think he does everything well," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Dareus before the game. "He's stout in the running game, he's instinctive, he can rush the passer, he runs well, he makes plays in pursuit and screen passes and things like that. For a guy his size, he's a very active player."

Belichick believes Dareus, one of three Pro Bowl players on the Bills' defensive line, has enough athleticism to play end. And under Ryan, the Bills have moved Dareus into different alignments along the line.

But when Dareus is lined up directly over a center -- or shaded to either gap -- his 331 pounds and quick feet make him a nightmare for the man in the middle of the opponent's offensive line.

"Marcell Dareus is the best nose guard in the NFL," Dolphins center Mike Pouncey said this week. "Just look at his stats. You don't have 10 sacks at nose guard in this league unless you're a really good player. That he is."

Bills center Eric Wood practices against Dareus during training camp and also has been tasked with blocking Suh twice, in 2010 and 2014 -- holding him without a sack each time.

"Both are great players," Wood said this week. "Much different styles. Marcell is more of a read-type player. Not necessarily a true two-gapper but switches it up a lot. Suh likes to penetrate, likes to swim the gap. He's more disruptive up the field. Both really good at what they do."

Are teams valuing defensive tackles more highly in the modern NFL? That's debatable.

In 2011, there were five defensive tackles whose contracts averaged more than $10 million per season, including Suh. In the four years since, only four defensive tackles have signed deals worth more than $10 million per year: Suh, Dareus, Tampa Bay's Gerald McCoy and Cincinnati's Geno Atkins.

It's a sign of the rare skills that both Suh and Dareus possess, which should make both players a treat to watch Sunday and for years to come.

"When their careers are over, everybody will assess where they belong," Thurman said. "But greatness is greatness, and it's hard not to notice it. Both great players, both talented and it's a pleasure to get to watch them play."

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker contributed to this story.

Why Do People Blog? The Benefits of Blogging

When blogging started, the first blogs were really glorified online journals, and in all likelihood, becoming a professional blogger and making money online wasn't the goal. Since then, the blogosphere has evolved, and now people blog for many different reasons. There are even distinctions among types of blogs - business, lifestyle, fashion, food, and entertainment blogs, among others.

While the blogging scene has developed over the last decade, the benefits of blogging are still plentiful. Here's a list of reasons why people blog and how blogging can benefit your personal or professional life.

Express Yourself and Share Your Passions

The landscape has changed, but there are still countless blogs that serve as a platform for people to voice their ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Whether your passion is business, personal finance, cooking, politics, photography, or marketing, blogging gives you the opportunity to connect and network with likeminded individua ls who share the same passions.

    Make A Difference

Some people's passions lean toward supporting a cause. Whether it's a political, environmental or social cause, a blog is a great way to build awareness and garner support.

    Share Your Knowledge

If you're someone who loves to teach, starting a blog can provide the opportunity to educate others interested in your field of expertise. The best part is that, as you build resources on your blog to teach others, you may realize there is a chance to monetize your blog by creating educational products or services online.

    Refine Your Writing Skills

The more you write, the better you become at it. Most professional bloggers write on a regular basis and therefore analyze and proofread their writing constantly. You may even get feedback from readers to help you become a better writer.

However, being a good writer is not a prerequisite for a successful blog. Many very high profile bloggers are self-proclai med terrible writers, and part of their success could be attributed to their message of "If I can do it, so can you".

Learn How To Make Money Online

Most people start out with one blog, but along the way, they gain experience and eventually generate ideas for blogs in other niches. What you learn from your initial blog - the dos and don'ts, marketing strategies that are effective, how to make money blogging, etc. - will help you accelerate the growth of future ventures.

    Build Your Professional Network

Blogging is a community-based endeavor, and networking is one reason people engage in it. Whether you are a solopreneur or blogging to market your business, building relationships will facilitate your blog's growth.

Meanwhile, growing your online network has its own side benefits, such as gaining access to valuable software and tools, seminars, workshops, product unveilings, and other events.

    Earn More Exposure

Businesses create blogs primarily to expand their online presence, connect with potential customers, promote their brand in a positive conversation, and even generate online revenue.

Beyond the immediate results, businesses use content marketing to rank their posts in search engines, thereby generating residual leads and revenue.

Become an Authority in Your Industry

A blog can be utilized as a platform to showcase your knowledge and expertise. Publishing blog posts that are accurate, timely, relevant, and informative will eventually get the attention of industry insiders and earn you recognition as an authoritative source and thought-leader.

    Build an Online Portfolio

Blogging is a great way for aspiring authors and freelance writers to build up an online portfolio. By showcasing their writing skills on large platforms with expansive reach, freelancers can grow their exposure and sign new clients.

    Market Your Business

For companies and entrepreneurs, gaining online visibilit y is one of the best ways to grow subscribers, leads and ultimately revenue. This can't be achieved with a static corporate website. Creating blog content that is valuable, helpful, and/or entertaining is an effective way to grow your website's authority, online rankings, and traffic.

    Starting A Blog Today

As the internet and technology become more ingrained in our day-to-day lives, the benefits of blogging or building a website become impossible to ignore. However, unlike in the early days, bloggers don't need to have computer science degrees or HTML knowledge. Software such as WordPress.org and "how to start a blog" guides have made it simple and easy to set up a blog in 15 minutes. If you're unsure of whether blogging is right for you, use a free blogging platform for a few months before transitioning to a self-hosted solution.

How the Internet Helps People Make Money

Work has been part of a man's life the moment he was born. At a young age, you started working your best in school. Reaching teenage era, you started making your parents proud. And right after graduation, there the real work really starts. You get a job based on the course you took in college. You took education; you should be a teacher. You studied biology; you should be on a hospital's laboratory examining specimens. Doing the same routine every day.

how podcasts and videos make money

But what really makes a man happy when doing his job? Should he always be on the same field on what he learned from school?

Didn't you know that social media could actually make you earn money? Hey, they're not just for you socializing online. Sharing your selfies, uploading your video and overhauling your social media status can make millions of dollars in revenue. Now, I'm talking about this new online job.

Examples of fast earning and booming social media sites that have been earning millions of dollars are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. Another social media upstart called Tsu is attempting to do the same.

One of the site's greatest challenges is letting the users to know that they can earn profit from their posts. This has been one of the statements of Sebastian Sobczak, founder and CEO of Tsu, in an interview by ABC News.

The site started its company in October 2014. Furthermore, in only four months, more than 3 million individuals have joined, including known artists and musicians.

Let's know how these three amazing individuals make money on Tsu:

    Andrew Fromm | TSU: @AFromm

A songwriter who writes songs for Backstreet Boys, Selena Gomez, NSync, and Mark Anthony, is making money $18 per day. Another best way to earn money from Tsu is through expanding the network as per Fromm. That's why he brought Kimberly Henderson to the group.

    Kimberly Henderson | TSU: @kimberlyhmusic

Kim was referred by Andrew, giving Andrew $85 on the day Kim made $157 on Tsu. That's a lifetime earnings from Kim as long as she's making money on Tsu. Kim has been doing well in social media, and that makes her earn more. Way to go Kim!

    Kevin Hinkle | TSU: @Kevinhinkle

The last person who's making big on Tsu is Kevin Hinkle. See how inspirational it is how a homeless man becomes a social media sensation. Kevin has now over 40,000 followers, and started earning $900 on his first ramp on Tsu.

"You could easily be making hundreds of dollars per week. We have users who are of the same ilk as the beginning YouTubers who were not famous and now making a living out of YouTube. We have those same average Joes on Tsu."

The world is now filled with various resources we could either put to waste or make the most of by finding our unique niches and focus on finding the intersection between our passion and what the world is willing to pay for.

Tis the Season Already? How Holiday Shopping Now Can Save You Money Later

It might be hard to come to terms with, but the holiday shopping season is only a few weeks away due to so-called Christmas creep. While the holidays are typically filled with friends, family, food and fun, it's also one of the biggest spending periods of the year. However, there are some things you can do now to help alleviate the strain it might put on your budget.

    1. Start Making a List

When it comes to holiday shopping, staying organized is key. Taking the time to sit down and write out a shopping list can help you avoid making costly, unnecessary purchases. You can even take non-gift related purchases, like decorations or meals, into account. With this information you should be able to keep track of your holiday-related expenses, build yourself a budget, and keep yourself focused in a hectic shopping environment. Proper preparation now can wind up saving you tons later on.

    2. Subscribe to Newsletters

If you already have a pretty good idea of where you'll be doing your shopping, consider subscribing to those store's mailing lists and social media channels. Retailers tend to provide their subscribers with special deals and early alerts on upcoming sales. And if that wasn't enough, some brands will even reward you with a coupon (typically anywhere between 10%-15% off one purchase) for signing up or subscribing. All of this can provide you with some great opportunities to knock out some of your holiday shopping for less.

What Is Your Lifetime Cost of Debt? What Is Your Lifetime Cost of Debt? How much will you pay in interest over your lifetime? You may be surprised. Find Out Now »3. Sign Up for Layaway

An often overlooked tool, layaway allows consumers to spread out the cost of big-ticket items over the span of several months. When opting to place an item on layaway, you'll be required to make some sort of down payment (the amount of which will vary from store to store) and then make smaller payments over time. Unlike credit card purchases however, layaway payments are interest-free (though there may be fees, always read the fine print before signing up). Buying something on layaway will also ensure that it will still be around come the busy holiday shopping season. Just keep in mind that not every store offers layaway and policies vary from store to store. That said, if you're looking for a way to make that new TV or video game system a little more affordable, layaway might be a good option for you.

    4. Buy Some Things Early

Despite the massive amount of savings buzz Black Friday generates year after year, there are some items that rarely (if ever) get marked down on the big day. Gift cards, vacation packages, furniture, designer clothing and high-end electronics are all examples of products that typically don't receive any special treatment during the holiday season. This means you could find some savings by purchasing these items ahead of time, whether when they are on sale, or by financing them through a credit card or the previously suggested layaway option.

If you decide to use a credit card to finance your purchases, consider coming up with a plan to pay it off so you don't have to deal with the dreaded holiday debt hangover, and wind up carrying that debt far into the next year. This calculator can help you come up with a plan to pay it off. Also, be careful about using too much of your available balance, as doing so can have a negative impact on your credit scores, especially if you're maxed out. You can see how your debt is affecting your credit by getting your credit scores for free on Credit.com, and watching them update monthly.

While the holidays might be a stressful time for shoppers, you can opt out of the madness by planning ahead and getting your shopping done sooner. Not only will you find yourself more relaxed, but you could greatly decrease the chances you take on debt this holiday season. Remember, the holidays are about spending time with your loved ones, not scouring the aisles for expensive gifts.

ICYMI: The state is making money, DiNapoli report says

New York state is turning a profit.

A report released by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli on Friday shows that the state's cash flow over the first five months of the fiscal year exceeded August projections by $609 million. What's more, state spending is $473.2 million below projections.

That works out to about $5 billion in profits over the first five months of the fiscal year.

But, DiNapoli cautions, Wall Street's volatility is leaving the state's financial picture blurry.

"With the state's strong reliance on Wall Street profitability and the recent volatility in financial markets, the revenue outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year is uncertain," DiNapoli said in a release.

Still, the report's highlights include only positives. Business tax and other tax receipts generated most of the higher-than-expected tax collections, combining for $274 million above projections, according to the report. Personal income tax receipts were $52.7 million above projections.
