WWE Money in the Bank 2016 Results – Dean Ambrose Wins It All

Arguably the most historic WWE Money in the Bank has come to a close. For the first time in event history, Money in the Bank saw two WWE world title changes in one night, with the MITB winner cashing in his briefcase less than an hour after he acquired it.

Dean Ambrose became the first guy to win and cash in Money in the Bank in the same night to become WWE world champion. While I certainly predicated Ambrose to win the MITB match, I and nor do I believe anyone else saw this one coming. If the idea of MITB was to shock the wrestling world, well mission accomplished WWE.

Dean Ambrose won Money in the Bank earlier in the night defeating Alberto Del Rio, Chris Jericho, Cesaro, Sami Zayn, and favorite Kevin Owens. All indications were that the Owens was the original booked winner of the match. The card drastically changed over the weekend with the odds making a swing from Owens to Ambrose in one of the most interesting stories of the year.

The Money in the Bank match delivered as expected. Cesaro was the star yet it was Ambrose who walked away with the briefcase. Ambrose wound up taking out Jericho to win the match after claiming the briefcase. The win made sense for all of the reasons I documented in my predictions blog but what happened shortly after surprised everyone.

Seth Rollins regained the WWE world title, defeating former Shield ally Roman Reigns with a pedigree. I don't know what was more shocking here, the win or the fact that Rollins pinned Reigns clean 1-2-3 in the middle. Rollins won the match after hitting a second pedigree to defeat Reigns. Ambrose came out shortly after, cashed in, and defeated his former Shield partner to win the title. JBL sold the storyline of a lunatic becoming WWE world champion and what that meant to the company.

I think the bigger story here is the end of the Roman Reigns experiment. Reigns dropping the title is a clear indication that the company, specifically Vince McMahon has given up on him. Reigns has been the "chosen one" for the last two years and was just never able to click with fans on his ascend to the WWE world title. Several reports over the last few months indicated that Vince was sticking with Reigns regardless of the obvious pain points Reigns was facing with fans. Taking the title off of Reigns only two months after winning at WrestleMania is clearly the kiss of death for Reigns.

Where do they go from here? As much as I enjoyed the Rollins-Ambrose series the first time around, I think a third series is absolute overkill. Unfortunately Ambrose has been booked so poorly in recent months that even if the company truly wanted to get behind him, they have a lot of work to do. I have to think that Rollins, Ambrose, or Reigns winds up turning, with Regins and Rollins likely swapping spots. Regardless, while I am an Ambrose fan, I can't imagine Ambrose being anything more than a transition champion.

AJ Styles defeated John Cena in a match as great as everyone expected. Styles was one step ahead of Cena throughout the match which makes sense logically given how rusty Cena should be, Styles beat Cena with help from Gallows and Anderson which likely means that Cena will beat Styles the next 2-3 shows in a row. With Ambrose as champion, Styles is set up nicely as a challenger if that is the road they wish to travel.
