10 years later, Twitter still isn't close to making money

Technology moves at a breakneck pace. The social networking site is now the go to place for following breaking news events in real time. New hardware, software and services can beet their demise rather quickly.

It's unclear whether Twitter can ever reach enough customers to succeed. Holy cow - have we really experienced a decade of Tweets?

Although the first tweet was actually sent on the 21 March 2006 many of us probably didn't start using the social network until several years later. "Since then, every moment of every day, people connect about the things they care about most - all over the world", reads the post on the Twitter blog.

As Twitter completed its 10 years on Monday, it sent out a series of thank you notes in form of emails, videos to its users. It became so much easier to complain publicly about the bad pizza delivery you received last night when you can tag the company in your tweet.

At the same time, the social network has facilitated a two-way communication between businesses and customers. The main emphasis on twitter is to be short and precise.

One news organization did decide to welcome followers. It is for this reason that the service deserves to be celebrated. In 2013, Twitter was one of the ten most-visited websites and has been described as "the SMS of the Internet" .
