Matt Holliday's $120 million deal among baseball's best big-money contracts

LOS ANGELES -- Matt Holliday walked into the otherwise empty visitors dugout at Dodger Stadium Sunday afternoon, carrying one of the two first baseman's gloves he owns. He was set to make his first start at first base in weeks and wanted help. He wanted to practice, and needed somebody to hit grounders and make throws to him.

Eventually, Holliday made it onto the field to do everything he could do on this day to live up to his end of his deal with the Cardinals, which is what he has been doing since he re-signed with St. Louis before the 2010 season, for seven years and $120 million.

There have been a lot of long-term deals that have turned out badly, a player underperforming because of injury, or simple regression, or maybe even indifference. But in investing in Holliday, the Cardinals have gotten what they wanted out of the outfielder, so much that his deal is arguably one of the best big-money contracts ever executed.
