Reliever Darren O'Day's new backloaded, four-year, $31 million contract with the Orioles contains $4 million in deferred money and a no-trade clause that allows him to block deals to seven teams each year.
According to an industry source, O'Day, 33, will make $5 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017, $8 million in 2018, $8 million in 2019 and $1 million in each of the four years after the contract expires (2020-23).
Before each season, starting next year, O'Day can pick seven teams to put on his no-trade list. The list can be changed each year. During the 2018 season, however, O'Day will have achieved 10-and-5 rights, meaning he has spent 10 years in the major leagues and five straight with one team, and will have a full no-trade clause. At that point, he will be able to pick where he wants to be traded, if at all.
This will be O'Day's fifth season in Baltimore.
The Orioles have not announced the contract yet, but it could come as early as Friday or during Saturday's FanFest.
The deal was officially agreed upon this week, pending a physical, which O'Day took and passed.
