Twitter turns 10, still isn't making money

Twitter turns 10 years old today, making us all feel incredibly old and nostalgic. Many still misunderstand the micro-blogging site, but in an effort to change that, the company released its new ad, or we can say, a thank you note. Eleven people were killed and 11 injured at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo earlier that year.

Twitter is something else. Dorsey has said he wants to create a more intuitive experience that offers up a streamlined product portoflio.

Former Olympic decathlon champ Bruce Jenner announced his new transgender identity on Twitter.

The previous holder of that record was President Barack Obama, who also held the retweet record following his re-election in November 2012 for "Four more years". Whether you like it or not.

While reaching 10 years is an incredible milestone, given how the Silicon Valley is littered with crash and burn stories, it does however bring up an intriguing scenario.

If that is not politics, what is?

Starting from humble beginnings, Twitter (then Twttr), crashed on to the scene in 2006 thanks to a team of developers from fledging podcast company Odeo, who were asked to pitch a fresh concept to help take the firm forward at a hackathon-style event. Had we known it was the first time, we would have made it more impressive.

There lies the rub.

On its birthday, #LoveTwitter is trending, but just a few days ago #RIPTwitter was trending.

Twitter became a tool of unity during the Boston Marathons as over 27 million Tweets were sent from around the world, spreading news of the bombings, assisting the manhunt, and keeping up the spirit of @BostonStrong. This is its lowest value yet.

The micro-blogging site is experimenting with a Facebook-type way of sorting your timeline where tweets are sorted by relevance and not in reverse chronological order as it happens now.

Before the image of drowned three-year-old Alan Kurdi hit the front pages of newspapers previous year, prompting European governments to commit to taking in more Syrian refugees, the image had been circulating on Twitter for hours before editors made the decision - a controversial one for some - to publish it unedited on front pages. It remains a romantic thought. The #ThankYouSachin campaign using photo Tweets with a personalised message and digital autograph from Tendulkar himself, generated more than three million Tweets according to the BCCI. And it's our job to make sure they see the most important things and the things that matter to them, affirmed Dorsey. Younger folks like visual stuff. "I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!" Previously, there were rumors that the 140 characters limit will be replaced by the new 10,000 character limit, to give users a chance to express themselves in a single tweet.
